Have you read the Guernsey book yet? If not, drop everything else!

The potato society one? How did you know I've got that one to read? Will read it when I get to it in order of acquisition... but that won't be long now!

I went looking through the Book Search function to see what others thought. Especially interested in your thoughtful observations.

But, literary commentary aside, I'm quite sure you'll enjoy this one. It's turning into a bit of a cult classic.

I'm rarely critical of a love story. Especially not one set on Guernsey.

Some of it was a bit forced, especially towards the end. The format limits the story-telling options.

The juxtaposition between a developing love story and the realities of the wartime existence made the book for me. It wasn't all sweet. Like people, there are good bits and bad bits, and the most interesting characters and situations are those where there are tensions and conflicts.

Then again. Some of it grated. After a while I winced whenever that American chap made an appearance.

Yes - the way they had to tweak the format at the end annoyed me, well, it was a shame.

Funnily enough, I was OK with the American, but I didn't see much to see in the love interest... just wasn't "present" enough for me.

I did like the setting and the feelings people had for the island.

I was disappointed not to love it, if that helps! Oh, and I'm a cynical old thing about love stories, I spose...

Eh well, I tried to give it a longer and more careful than usual review...

Washington in July? That will be a completely new experience for you! Be prepared for some very high humidity heat...

Let me know your plans when they firm up. We're looking forward to seeing you again.

I've been in New York on the Fourth of July. Even early in the morning it was quite stifling. We'll cope, mainly by staying inside the big museums with everyone else.

Not sure about dates yet, but it will be within a week of 4 July, and DD and I will probably be staying at the youth hostel in town. We'll be wanting to maximise our limited time seeing things.

However, I would love to see you and yours. DD would be charmed by your daughters. Once I can work out the dates, I'm happy to shout you dinner somewhere. preferably where they have some fair dinkum American cooking.
