But, literary commentary aside, I'm quite sure you'll enjoy this one. It's turning into a bit of a cult classic.

Some of it was a bit forced, especially towards the end. The format limits the story-telling options.
The juxtaposition between a developing love story and the realities of the wartime existence made the book for me. It wasn't all sweet. Like people, there are good bits and bad bits, and the most interesting characters and situations are those where there are tensions and conflicts.
Then again. Some of it grated. After a while I winced whenever that American chap made an appearance.

Funnily enough, I was OK with the American, but I didn't see much to see in the love interest... just wasn't "present" enough for me.
I did like the setting and the feelings people had for the island.
I was disappointed not to love it, if that helps! Oh, and I'm a cynical old thing about love stories, I spose...
Eh well, I tried to give it a longer and more careful than usual review...

Let me know your plans when they firm up. We're looking forward to seeing you again.

Not sure about dates yet, but it will be within a week of 4 July, and DD and I will probably be staying at the youth hostel in town. We'll be wanting to maximise our limited time seeing things.
However, I would love to see you and yours. DD would be charmed by your daughters. Once I can work out the dates, I'm happy to shout you dinner somewhere. preferably where they have some fair dinkum American cooking.
