I don't think it's any secret that I've been feeling a little pressured lately. Having to make the university presentation was a big deal for me, and I envy those who can always manage to say the right things at the right time. So I'll be turning AIM back on now.

Mind you, the local power company is cutting electricity during business hours tomorrow, which is a major bummer for me. I depend on the Internet a great deal, and so I'll be out of action for seven hours, unless I want to go into town and pay to use an Internet cafe or pay hourly rates at Starbucks or something.

I can get a few hours' use out of the laptop, so I might seize the chance to get the support documentation finished, so long as I remember to transfer the files across.

I've been thinking some more about my novel idea. At the moment there's not enough to hang a whole novel off, but I'm having a great deal of fun thinking of things to do with it. It's a place where different rules apply, and I'm working through what those rules might be, once one accepts the rather extraordinary premise of the situation.

Heh. This is why I don't get jetlagged. I'm up half the night anyway

Same here, I can function on most time zones given a bit of notice, though Japan back to the US was hard.
Actually no Japan to Hawaii was the weirdest. Left Japan at 9 PM Tues and landed in Hawaii 8 AM Tuesday.

Hm. That *is* odd.

I can imagine the journal:

Tuesday: flew in an aeroplane
Tuesday AGAIN: dealt with another Tuesday.

That's how it was for me - one Friday I spent the morning packing up my gear, got on a plane at Canberra airport in mid-afternoon, got on another one in sydney an hour before sunset, flew and flew and flew through the night, landed in LA on Friday morning, caught another plane to Washington, flew and flew through the day and into the night, got picked up by ResQgeek, had a quick tour of DC, a pleasant couple of hours chatting with him and his missus, and then rolled into bed late on Friday night.

Fridays can be pretty long at the best of times, but that one was beyond a saga!

Cleaning out the inbox and I found this thread. Sounds like how my Friday this week is going to be--up and working 10:50-14:55. Beat feet to catch the airport shuttle at 15:10 for a 15:52 arrival at Kansai to check in for a 17:55 departure to Vancouver. Arrive Vancouver at 10 AM I think and arrive in New York about 12 hours later. Zooey!

On another note a friend who's going to Canberra on business is flying Dulles->LA->Sydney->Melb->Canberra. Told him he should suggest to his boss that they hire a car in Sydney, with the wait at the airports and what not, it's faster than the skip to Melbourne.

I'm not real keen on this idea. Getting off a long flight and immediately hopping into a car in a strange city on the wrong side of the road, well, make sure they have their insurance fully paid up!

But yes, it would certainly be quicker than going to Melbourne and then to Canberra. The freeway goes right past the airport, and it's just a couple of turns and traffic lights from the terminal carpark onto the freeway which goes all the way to Canberra with no traffic lights. Just a stop about fifteen minutes down the road to pay a $3.30 toll. Then it's 110 km/h all the way onto Canberra's main street. Two hours at that speed. Once you're on the freeway, the only turn is about an hour and a half down the road where you turn off past Goulburn onto the Federal Highway, which is more freeway.

Even hiring a car service is, despite the extra expense, probably easier. And there have to be those that will do it. First I told him to call the travel agent himself--rather than going through company's travel department--and see why he can't just get a direct flight from Sydney.

Knew it wasn't too bad of a drive from Sydney to Canberra--when I caught the bus it went via Sydney Airport but I was alseep before we were even that far so couldn't judge time and didn't remember from when I did the drive.

Flights to Canberra are plentiful and frequent. Both Qantas and Virgin Blue fly there about once an hour.

It will take about two hours to clear customs and take the shuttle over to the domestic terminal. The LAX flights usually fly overnight and land just after the curfew lifts at 0600. Along with every other long-haul flight, so the immigration hall fills up quick. I'd want to budget three hours from getting off one plane and boarding the next, to be on the safe side, though if their tickets are flexible enough they could go for less time and catch a later flight if unlucky. Certainly not less than an hour. That goes for Melbourne flights as well, which also leave from the domestic terminal. Sydney-Melbourne is the busiest and most competitive route in the country.

Yeah told me he lands at 6:12 or some such and they'd looked at a flight to Melb at 9:07 figuring that would give them time to clear and get to the terminal without rushing. They've now possibly found a flight to Canberra, told him calling the agent himself would be easier.

Thanks for the info, he says thanks as well :)
