Amsterdam, here I come!
May. 2nd, 2008 01:59 pmMuch to my surprise, Amsterdam's bid for the 2010 Anniversary Convention won in a global poll. I was sure that the Americans would wrest it back by sheer weight of numbers.
Moem put on a brilliant presentation at the London Convention, and Amsterdam easily headed the votes there. Unstoppable moementum, probably.
So, looks like our 2010 holiday will include Amsterdam. I think we'll combine it with one of those river cruises, starting or leaving from Amsterdam with the other end of the trip in Eastern Europe somewhere. And an opportunity to spend a day or two in Istanbul.
Must start research. And dreaming.

Date: 2008-05-02 07:46 am (UTC)I'm not sure about the river cruise idea. You could certainly do a Rhine cruise and then hop over to a Danube cruise.
The downside, I hear, is that river cruises are horrendously expensive compared with ocean cruises. That makes sense because the economies of scale are vastly different, and being inland in Europe, they can't employ cheap Asian labour.
On the other hand, being on a boat is certainly the best way to see the Rhine gorge, and it only takes a few days...

Date: 2008-05-02 05:31 pm (UTC)I'm looking forward to an Amsterdam adventure or two. Have to stockpile appropriate books in preparation.
I don't suppose I can bag them up and plop them into the canals?

Date: 2008-05-04 05:18 am (UTC)Prior to the winner being announced, I thought the USA vote would end up being divided between the two North American contenders. But with the US having the largest membership of any single country, I thought it would probably be a close run race.
I guess I was more surprised by the winning margin for Amsterdam (I saw the stats when they were inadvertently made public on the BC Forums for a brief period). The Europeans must have really got behind it and the combined European vote got it over the line.
