I used Babelfische to translate a comment of mine about pasta sauce for Elhamisabel's blog, so she wouldn't wear her brain out in trying to work out what I was saying in Englische, and I translated it back again as a check to see if it came out the right way up.

Yes and no. I particularly enjoyed the conversion of "hard to go wrong" as "to strongly wrongly go").

What a lyrical program!

That piece of German amply illustrates how easy it is to strongly wrongly go with a crude translation machine! Babelfish is fun because of all the mistakes it makes, but I'm disappointed it hasn't improved much over time. Yes, Babelfish translation is often a whole lot better than none at all, but there are so many elementary, easily curable wronglygoings that strongly suck.

I use translate.google.com

I had no complaints from the poor man in Germany I was trying to deal with and he kindly used the same site to send me english emails. They seemed to make sense so I can only assume the german would have made sense to him.
Let me know if I am totally wrong.

Google is your FRIEND

or Ich verwende translate.google.com Ich hatte keine Beanstandungen vom armen Mann in mit Deutschland, das ich versuchte, zu beschäftigen und er benutzte freundlich den gleichen Aufstellungsort, um mir englische email zu schicken. Sie schienen, sinnvoll zu sein, also kann ich nur annehmen, daß der Deutsche ihm sinnvoll gewesen haben würde. Mich informieren, wenn ich total falsch bin.

A quick test from English to German and back again refeals some shortcomings in the translational computationing:

The marking sign of the people is deepest waves red I over ours martyred dead. The function category can kiss mine ass, which I have the job of the foreman finally!

Really, it is very lyrical. Apart from some mistakes it sounds very lyrical.

One of my favorite time-sucks is to put a joke into Babelfish and translate it through one or more languages and back to English. (Narrative jokes of the "Two tall guys and a duck walk into a bar..." sort tend to work better than one-liners.)

One of my personal favourites:

In translating from English to Japanese and back, one software changed "The Grapes of Wrath" to "The angry raisins"
