I'm spending far too much time in the small hours of the morning in mucking about on Wikipedia. Constitutional theory and practice has long been a passion of mine and sometimes I wonder why I spend time debating complex questions with people who have their heads up their bum. But it's a lot of fun.

Kerri gets back sometime soon. I suppose it's appalling that I don't know precisely, but I don't have her itinerary and she said she'd let me know. I await a phone call from the airport to be picked up, as she's probably in the air now.

I took Claude the cat into the vet yesterday as his paw shows no sign of healing. The vet wants to do an x-ray and see if he can drain the wound. Possibly there is a broken bone, but I think it's just that Claude hasn't put enough pressure on his sore paw to drain the infection. That's happening now, and I'll get a phone call to pick him up and pay the bill later today.

'Scuse my ignorance, but as one who avoids the political arena like the plague...what *is* constitutional theory and practice? Can you do a nutshell education?

A constitution is the fundamental legal document for a nation. In the UK it's a set of enactments that range over about a thousand years along with a fair bit of unwritten convention.

The way that the theory is put into practice fascinates me. This is not always straightforward. For example the Australian Constitution makes no reference to the Prime Minister, a person of some importance.

The Governor-General was given extensive powers in his own right at Federation and the role of the Queen has steadily eroded, to the point where she is only a nominal head of state.

This was a point of some importance during the recent republican referendum, during which I was both a political journalist and a political footsoldier. I find it interesting because it's stuff that very few people know much about and there is often a lively debate.

I also get to point out to people they have their head up their bum which is always fun.

Ahh Interesting. I guess here that would also include debating things in our "Freedom of Speech" rights, and just exactly how far that freedom actually goes. Or the "Right to Bear Arms" Hope your kitty does better. I'm guessing Kerry is there now. Have fun!
