It's been about ten years since my last eye test and pair of glasses, and there's been a steady deterioration. As happens to every middle-aged bloke. I can still see as good (or as bad, more accurately) as ever in the distance, but within about a metre I just can't focus on small print. If I move things out to a more comfortable distance, the print is too small to read. Reading maps on my recent Washington trip was a painful process, as was trying to see the screen display on the digital camera.

I spent a lot of time with my glasses hanging out of my mouth, fiddling around with things. What a pain.

So it was off to the optometrist for myself and DD today. She escaped scot-free, but I knew that I'd need new glasses, and we eventually settled on a new pair after my daughter's fashion advice. She wanted something that wouldn't draw quite so much attention to my eyebrow(s), and the bloke selling the frames was pushing for a pair of the smaller, more narrow-eyed models, as I was sure he would. Turns out that there's good reasons for the smaller sizes, so I picked one that wasn't too bad. We all agreed on the model, and daughter went off for a tour of the mall while I had the rest of my test.

"Belladonna!" she had said, looking at my pupils, and so it was. Makes for an intimate inspection of the back of my eyeballs. Can you see my soul, Madam Optometrist? And what happens when you get a recent Asian immigrant in and ask them to read the eye chart. Are they declared blind?

No to both answers.

I could have driven home by myself, honest, officer! But it was uncomfortable, even with my sunglasses on, so I was very grateful for my darling daughter taking the wheel. She's such a treasure!

And I'd meant to go bookabout when I got back, but the glare outside made this impossible. I retreated to my room, drew the curtains and read a book.

Maybe tomorrow. It's been cloud, haze, work, eyes and who knows what will delay me tomorrow?

I think I have both those songs loaded up. I've got a CD player with a 25 disc jukebox, and I keep it loaded with classics. Dean Martin. Nat King Cole. Frank Sinatra. Barbra, Judy Garland, Glenn Miller, Grateful Dead.

Mind you, it's old technology now and I can do the same and more on my computer with MP3s.

I keep my glasses and keys and day-timer in certain set locations. My womenfolk scatter their possessions all over the house and sometimes there's a hunt for car keys, but I know exactly where my important things are. Because if I didn't keep to a system I'd lose 'em for sure.
