2. Slept under the stars (army time: every now and then it’d be a clear, dry night, and no need to erect a hootchie.)

5. Watched a meteor shower (not that exciting. More meteors than usual, and that’s not saying much.)

6. Given more than you can afford to charity (but it was a worthy cause, and I don’t regret a cent. Wish I could have given more.)

7. Been to Disneyland

8. Climbed a mountain (Mount Taylor, after the 2003 bushfires, to leave a book on the windy summit. Any other country, it’d be a hill, but it’s called Mount Taylor, and I’m sticking to it.)

9. Held a praying mantis

10. Sang a solo

11. Bungee jumped

12. Visited Paris (twice, and want to go back)

13. Watched a lightning storm at sea

14. Taught yourself an art from scratch (I’m not very good at watercolours, but I can do them)

15. Adopted a child

16. Had food poisoning

17. Walked to the top of the Statue of Liberty

18. Grown your own vegetables

19. Seen the Mona Lisa in France (just to tick the box. Trust me, you get a better view with a poster.)

20. Slept on an overnight train (well, if you could call it “sleeping”. More napping, really.)

23. Taken a sick day when you're not ill (I was driving home from my sister’s wedding. No way I was going to be able to drive through the night and report for duty at the bank. I rang in sick, claiming extreme fatigue.)

26. Gone skinny dipping (You kidding? My all-over tan was the pride of the Regiment!)

36. Taught yourself a new language (Ja, Ich spreche keine Deutsch!)

37. Had enough money to be truly satisfied (I had a whole dollar once as a kid, and I was the satisfiedest kid ever. Then I spent it on junk food of my own choosing, and I was even more satisfieder.)

38. Seen the Leaning Tower of Pisa in person. (Never had the time, though I’ve had the opportunity, and certainly the inclination)

39. Gone rock climbing

44. Visited Africa (well, we got off the ship at Port Said to browse the stalls of the portside merchants for a half hour. Went through passport control, so it counts.)
