Shipmates!
Mar. 29th, 2008 05:36 pmI have carried out a recconnaissance, and although it may not be easy, I think that it is entirely feasible.
Mary Rose, I'm afraid to say, needs a complete re-rigging before being ready to take the sea, and the machinery on Warrior is beyond my ken.
But I quietly walked the decks of Nelson's flagship today, discussed the project with the odd conspirator in the orlop, considered the powder magazine with a knowing eye, and looked up at the ratlines with keen interest.
Tomorrow I'll return, and I confidently expect to be out plundering the richest shipping lanes in the world at the helm of my own first rate privateer, with a scratch crew of worthy seadogs fleecing the Frogs. And the Panamanians.
The biggest obstacle may be the public transport system. It took me three buses and two hours to reach the Hard. Appropriately named, I thought. "Yer, it's complicated, but that's 'ow it is in Pompey, d'ye see? A Number 41 should get you there, but failing that, and those timetables aren't worth relying on just between you and me, take any bus to Commercial Road and a Number 17 will be along in a tick. Or maybe a Number 18... Any ways, get a ticket off the next driver, if you wish. I don't like selling tickets myself, so just you sit back and I'll get you to Cosham where you need to change."
Which I saw any number of Nelson's possessions in the museum, and a couple of original Geoff Hunts in the Naval Museum.

Date: 2008-03-30 03:23 am (UTC)I remember visiting Portsmouth almost 10 years ago when I briefly lived in Guildford. There was some sort of Naval Festival going on the day I visited and I remember seeing the Mary Rose and HMAS Victory.
You'll probably hate me for saying this, but public transport served me very well that day. A direct train from Guildford to Portsmouth Harbour. I stepped off the train and straight into the middle of all the festivities...
I guess I'll be on the lookout for the news headlines...
