“That is soooo cool!”

I’m hearing this a lot from my passengers now, when they catch sight of my iPod, busily playing a music video. I found a DVD called “Late Night Moods” with a selection of largely female singers. Missy Higgins, Norah Jones, Jann Arden, Sheryl Crow and a whole bunch more.

I’ve also got a few singles, and I had David Campbell doing “Mack The Knife” – a very superior swing performance – the other night when a DC fan hopped in. She was over the moon, and sang along to it and some of the other tunes.

What I really need is a jazz DVD for the older bunch who don’t find Britney Spears quite so fascinating. Like me.

But I’ve got to admit that the iPod is very cool. It sits up front on the dash, playing a tiny video, but still clear enough for my passengers to appreciate, especially if they are sitting in the front seat.

If I don’t have a video, I have a wide selection of music, from Locatelli to Meatloaf.
And when there’s nobody in the cab, and I’m sitting on a rank all by myself, I’ve got movies to watch. Camelot, Borat, O Brother Where Art Thou?

And lately I’ve taken to uploading my West Wing episodes. With subtitles, so I can catch all the jargon. Now that’s cool!

Are you becoming one of those 'hip' adults I seem to be hearing about?!?!

Ah, it's the technology that attracts me. If Apple could squeeze a phone and a camera and a GPS into the same box, I'd be as hip as ever you please.

Next I've got to find a way to rig up a disco ball...

Won't fluffy dice prove just as sexy?

Dice would imply an element of chance that my passengers might find uncomfortable whizzing through roundabouts.

what you need is some dice that flash different colours, then you would have the dice and the disco ball at the same time!

Say what?

You can watch West Wing with Australian subtitles!?!

English-to-English translation. What a concept! Maybe I'll finally be able to watch BBC TV.

(p.s.: I know where you can get a good deal on a used disco ball.)

It's the political jargon that gets me. US politics works different to Aussie.

I know what you mean about UK TV. The first time I watched The Bill it was like they were speaking a different language.

Eh... wait, that's English vs German, right.

PS: you'd rather say "stimmt so" in a situation where you pay for something (such as a taxi bill) and it's 18.40 € and you hand over a 20 € bill and say "stimmt so", meaning he can keep the change.
"Stimmt genau" is used to express agreement.

How come your cab related journal entries aren't also on [livejournal.com profile] canberracabbie? Looks like you haven't posted there since September.

Ooops! Sprung!

To tell the truth, I got sick of writing special cabbie entries, signing in and out...

I (heart) video ipods. Mine was particularly useful when I was jetlagged in France with only French TV on at 3AM. Propped up the iPod on the bedside table, lay back, and watched until I drifted off again.

If the hassle of signing in and out was the main reason, one trick might be to use different browsers for the two accounts (e.g. IE for one, Firefox for the other), then you can have separate active cookies keeping you signed into both...

I noticed when we were in NYC some of the cabs had screens in the back with gps, and tv, it was seriously cool! All we get to look at here is the footprints on the backs of the front seats.

One DVD that may appeal to all ages is Robbie Williams Live at the Albert. http://www.amazon.com/Robbie-Williams-Live-at-Albert/dp/B0000640VD. Even if you don't like Robbie, he does "swing" marvellously, and he is a fabulous entertainer.

Ack. I kind of wish you hadn't written about all of this just when I have a bit of dosh to spare (not to self: repeat as nauseum "You need a new vaccum cleaner, You need a new vaccum cleaner)

I love your taste in movies!!........inc West Wing!

Well, so have I. This is my first, as of last week. The Touch is just awesomely cool. Even cooler now that they've lowered the price and loaded more features on. If only I'd known!

Next step is an iPhone.
