It's Summertime and the living is queasy.
Dec. 1st, 2007 01:03 pmCoomie the dog loves chasing flies. It's the highlight of her day. She'll hunt one along the window pane, then leap up and catch it and crunch it up and be happy about it. Disgusting, I know, but she's a dog of simple pleasures. She loves the chase and she lives for the feel of chiton under her teeth.
Well, it's cicada season here. One day into summer and the world is full of their shrill hum. Little brown skins cling to the gum trees.
Coomie went outside yesterday, and returned with a cicada clamped firmly in the world's biggest doggie smile. She'd caught the world's biggest fly and she wanted everyone to share and savour the experience.
You've never heard such crunching. Con gusto. At the end there was just a couple of big cicada wings left over. Coomie regarded them. paused for breath, and then crunched them up as well with a sound of cellophane.
Leaving her audience with that butterflies in the stomach feeling..
Then she was sick everywhere.
DS was detailed to clean up the mess, and it looked for a moment that he'd be sick everywhere too.
That's December in Australia.
