"It's our anniversary dinner," I told the lady. "Twenty-four years we've been married."

"That's nice! Do you want fries with that?"

Yes, I took Kerri to a fast food restaurant for our anniversary. Ali Baba's in Civic, purveyors of fine Lebanese tucker to go.

But we ate in, off china plates, no less. Yummy and scrummy, I love these spicy kebabs and wraps and tabouli and stuff.

And then we went to the movies. Dendy Premium, with the reclining seats and the footrests and the drinks tables and the in-flight service. We watched Death at a Funeral in comfort. And laughed ourselves silly. It's a variation on the farce at a country house that the British do so well. I spotted the big scene coming, but wasn't sure just how they would handle it, and I almost bust something when it happened.

One of the good things about being a taxidriver is that you get to know which movies and restaurants are good. If the Ottoman was open on Mondays, I would have taken Kerri there, but instead we opted for a light (and cheap) meal and a good movie in comfort.

I steered Kerri past the cab rank on the way back, and exchanged a few words with the new driver of Taxi 165, my old mount. A slow night, he informed me, but I could see that for myself. One of the reasons why I take Monday nights off.

I've also started booking ferries and things for our holiday next year. Portsmouth to Guernsey runs six days a week, and of course the day it doesn't is the day we check out of our Portsmouth hotel. So we'll have to extend our stay. The alternative was to have just one night in Portsmouth, and I really want a whole day to look over the Victory and explore the town. So now I'll have two.

In Guernsey, Jenny Kendall-Tobias has graciously agreed to come to dinner with us. Jenny and her partner and maybe her infant son. I've promised her Bollinger and Tim-Tams.

It's going to take me a year of driving sixty hours a week to pay for the trip, but oh boy, am I looking forward to it! By the time February rolls around, I reckon I'll have had full value in dreams alone.

Yipes! What's fuul? Some sort of chicken dish, maybe?

Silver next year, but I'm going to be dead broke from about March onwards. You'll see us in London lining up at the soup kitchen and hitch-hiking to Heathrow. Thank goodness our tickets home are already paid for.

The only slver in my life next year might be a handful of low-value coins.

But the memories of our big trip will be golden!

Snap! I had felafel and tabouli for lunch today. I enjoyed "Death at a Funeral" too, having recently discovered that a work colleague's neice is married to Rupert Graves (is that 3 degrees of separation?).

Would love to attend the London BC convention but can't justify the expense having travelled to Europe only a couple of months ago. And the convention venue's close to where I used to live so I know the area well!
