For the past few weeks my printer hasn't been working and I've had to sneak the use of my son's computer and everything I've tried has been a failure and I've put off a lot of things that needed printing and I've been really unhappy about this new printer.

Today, faced with things which HAD to get printed, I went down and took a good look at it. I found that the power plug had fallen out of the socket. When I fixed that, it worked fine.

Doesn't that sort of thing rotate you????
We have a similar problem in [livejournal.com profile] daughterfan's house when her cleaning lady vacuums round the computer desk and occasionally knocks out plugs - I don't have the skill to determine what to push back where.

Safe journey SR & K.

Ah ! You of all people should know that "Checking the plug" is #2 on the list of computer fixing, right after "have you switched it off and on again?"

*Now* I get it why those people in the help desk call centers all around the world ask you first to check the plugs and cables. There are truly some idiots outthere. ;-P

What gave it away was when I decided to turn it off and on again to see what happened and nothing happened, no matter how many times or how hard I pressed the button. No little blinken lights or rumblings from within. No nuttin.

Things were easier back in the days when we was all cavemen. If your rock stopped working, you could see the problem and fix it.

Oh, man, that sounds like the sort of thing I would do.

Well, maybe, but you'd do it with bags more style. You wouldn't run round the house cursing and bumping into things and alarming the dog.

True, but only because I have no dog to alarm. I would, however, disturb the cats, especially Marissa, who likes to curl up on top of the printer: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mojosmom/539919837/in/set-72057594136615697/

Now there's a couple of cats who have got it made! I love the way that she is totally at ease on the printer. All she asks is for a cushion...

I've had to learn to remember to turn it off. The controls are on top, and every once in a while she will accidentally hit the "copy" button and freak herself out!

Sometimes the Simplest is the easiest.

You know, when I worked Tech Support, that was always my first question. :)

Yes, you are an idiot. Unfortunately, I beat you there. Back in late 2003 (or early 2004) I bought myself a laptop. I thought that it worked well. Then I realized it didn't have any sound.

So, I went to the little icon, clicked, nothing. I fiddled with this, I waggled that. Nothing worked. Eventually, I broke down and called the help desk (the one in India not those Canadian blokes).

Shortly, after receiving the explanation about the little physical dial (that could not be seen if you looked at the computer from the top) I had sound.

Little physical dial - a wife that still laughs at me - life can be good.

Heh. I'm glad I'm not alone. Your wife can laugh at me too.

Did I ever tell you about the time we tried to hook a different flat computer (this wasin the days when we had one computer in the flat for everyone!) up to the internet? We could not get it to work...until we checked which computer was plugged in to...I felt sorry for the person on the other end of the phone, they must have been so confused!
