Pete at leisure
Apr. 23rd, 2007 05:45 pmWell, not really. I'm sitting at a computer at the British Airways First lounge in Terminal 7 at JFK in New York, and I've got about an hour to go before my Qantas bird lifts off for Sydney, stopping briefly in LA. I may use some of this time to have a shower - it's going to be a 22 hour flight to Sydney.
Convention highlights.
I am so incredibly happy. It has been a wonderful wonderful weekend, and I have spent it with the most delightful people in the world, most of whom were hugged repeatedly. If the photographs show me with a smile, you're looking straight into my heart.
Spending the night eating pizza and drinking root beer with ResQgeek (and his three delightful girls) in Alexandria was wonderful. Unfortunately I crashed out far too early in the evening.
Driving down to Charleston with ResQgeek was fun. I really enjoy his company, his sense of humour, his ability to tell a story, his devotion to public service, his warm, generous heart, well, everything about him. And despite my attempts to portray the drive down as a horror story of me driving on the left hand side of the interstate, doing my best to obey the 95 mph speed limit, well no, ResQgeek drove every inch of the way.
We stopped at "South of the Border", just over the border into South Calinky, a tacky but tasteful Mexican-themed tourist trap. Finally learnt what a chilli dog was. Hmmm.
We left I-95 there and went via back roads, which equated mostly to what I'd call freeways. Deserted freeways with churches every few hundred metres. And odd signs stating that "Bridge Ices before Road", which made absolutely zero sense to me until ResQgeek enlightened me.
Drove into Charleston and out again at an amazing speed, heading for "The Bridge" radio station, where BookCzuk had lined up all the "foreigners" for a radio interview about BookCrossing. Well, a lot of them. Netstation and Molyneux were there, and Antof9, who was one of my "Imaginary Friends Become Real", to borrow from Inkognitoh's marvellous quote. I must now confess that I am quite in love with Ant.
Lizmopuddy and SirRoy were off playing pool in the "Keep SirRoy Drunk and feeling No Pain" project until he had to fly home for his mother's funeral. That was a sad note to the weekend, but he was very much amongst friends, and had some great moments before we poured him onto the plane home.
The radio talk went well, with Charleston informed about BookCrossing and (briefly) Tim Tams. The genial host was a dead ringer for JimOnTheRadio at BBC Radio Shropshire. ResQgeek left a book there, the host caught it, and joined BookCrossing, as RockDoc98.
We then went off and checked into the hotel, providing credit card numbers so that we shared the cost. Then out to BookCzuk's place, where we found any number of merry BookCrossers. Bumma lured us into her boudoir, where she held court. I'm a member of the global "I love Bumma Fanclub", and I love flirting with her. At the top of my voice, because she is very deaf.
My introduction to Scott, the new CEO of BookCrossing.com. In the words of MartiP, "Whatever he's on, I want some!". Talk about a livewire, million volt, out of control, manic! He'll fit right in. His wife is no slouch in the charm stakes, but very quiet in comparison. I loved the way they ribbed each other all weekend long. She spent a lot of time smiling fondly at her husband's antics.
We had pizza, drank beer, packed goodie bags, did a hundred other things and all too soon it was time to go. In a pattern that became all too familiar, we peeked into the bar on our way past and discovered it full of BookCrossers. My memory is quite shot and the details of whom I met when are quite fuzzy, but I spent a lot of time being extremely happy and huggy.
WhiteRaven - my hero. She puts my dreams into reality. I might fantasise about riding a jet-propelled superbike across the Grand Canyon, but she's done it. I love her quiet smile and gentle whimsy.
ReggiesGirl. And Reggie. Total darlings. I've been reading her blog for so long it was a delight to meet her.
Repeat the above for a lot of others.
GreedyReader. Wow, is she hot. She has the ability to melt my heart and send it streaming down into my boots.
JennyO. Sweetness personified. I was so glad when she won the skein of Froebe Fibers yarn I brought along as a doorprize donation from Tzurriz.
Buffra. Oh boy, she has a voluptuous figure and an ability to see straight through me. Hugging her is so much fun.
Ooops, they are calling my flight. More later.

Date: 2007-04-23 10:57 pm (UTC)One time on a trip to London we were in a car leaving Heathrow (I usually take the Piccadilly line). As we passed a sign that said "Humped Zebra Crossing" one of my co-workers remarked, "poor creature."
