Awesome computing power
Jul. 1st, 2004 08:12 pmI've been anxiously following my laptop on the Dell tracking page, and today was a day of high expectation, as after watching it be assembled, shipped, cleared through customs and delivered to the local carrier, today was THE DAY. Not too sure why I should be so excited - after all I bought a better one six months ago for my daughter's university course, but I guess this was because this one was mine and it would work properly unlike the clunker of an ex-government IBM I bought last year and it is my passport to fame and fortune via writing entertaining books about Bookcrossing.
Anyway, it arrived today, and I had it running five minutes after delivery. That's Dell for you. Before I even connected it to the network I ran XP SP2 through it, which it churned through at a rate of knots. Then Office 2003 - I have a MSDN copy and can install Office as many times as I like - and finally broke out OneNote because I've been reading Chris Pratley's blog and the man almost climaxes when he talks about it. If nothing else, it should serve me well for organising notes on the writing projects I've got planned.
Supposed to be a big day on the market, but apparently everyone had seen the interest rate rise coming so bugger all happened. Toll Holdings needs to drop 75c before I can buy it, but instead it went the other way. At least the Amcor-Santos gap finally widened in my favour and a few times reached the point where I could reverse the deal of a few weeks back and make a bit of profit. I'll hold on and see how it goes. If oil goes down a bit more it might work out well.
In other news, I had three long walks today. Losing about 250g daily - that's about half a pound for those who use Imperial measurements. Keep it up and I should lose the paunch in a month or so. Have to make sure I keep on exercising during my holiday. That means long walks along the beach at Surfers Paradise and along the river at Rockhampton. That'll be hard to take.
Checked out a few opshops in Woden. Found a nice pair of strides that the previous owner had hemmed up about 10cm. Unpicked the stitches and they are just the right length. Found a copy of Taronga amongst a few other books. Might release it at Taronga Park Zoo. I see that this thought has occurred to others! It should be a good introduction to my chapter on Australian wildlife. Have to find something to release outside Steve Irwin's place on the Sunshine Coast in passing.
