End of the week
Jan. 20th, 2008 11:08 pmI'm rapidly growing a reputation as the ABBA cabbie. My little iPod almost always draws a comment from the passengers, especially if I'm playing the ABBA video and there's a bunch of girls in the cab. They sing along.
Blokes take a look, and after they appreciate the technology, ask, "Any porn?"
I put on Borat, and the nude wrestling scene satisfies the porn-seekers.
I got a John Coltrane video, but though the images are fine, his pieces are a little more raucous than the gentle background music I prefer. The Chet Baker video I bought at the same time works better, but poor old Chet looks awfully wrinkled and tired at the end of his career.
Dave Brubeck, maybe. Can't find a Miles Davis video I like.
Tired, and with no Silver Service jobs slated for the Sunday morning airport run, I gave up about four on Sunday morning, took the car down to Tuggeranong, cleaned out, gassed up, and signed off.
It's been pretty thin times for this cabbie over the past couple of weeks.
Filling in the blanks in the holiday. We worked out how to get the kids back from Sydney. We join our ship in Hong Kong, the kids fly back to Sydney, and we hadn't quite worked out the logistics - they arrive back in the evening after the last Canberra plane has gone. Looked like we'd have to buy a room in a nearby hotel, with shuttles or taxis to get them there, maybe a bus in the morning.
But the cheapest option is actually to hire a car, a small car, and have DD drive back along the Hume. They'll arrive home about midnight and can drop the car off the next day. It will be a long day, but with two drivers they can swap over if need be, break the trip up at service stations along the way.
A similar solution to getting to Portsmouth after docking at Southampton in the morning. I'd thought of getting the train, but on checking that our room in Portsmouth includes free parking, hiring a car to look at local sights (such as Stonehenge) and driving to our hotel for afternoon checkout makes a lot of sense. We can then do some more exploring the next day, and on the third day walk around Portsmouth before taking the ferry to Guernsey early next morning.
I'm working on a spreadsheet to keep track of everything we need do. It's two months away from home and reasonably complicated, so I want to be sure everything fits together.
