Mandrake

After a few fits and starts - a "segmentation error" and a hard disk that began to sound like a can full of marbles - I installed Mandrake and got it to default to Gnome, where my server is now looking very pretty and I'm happily pressing buttons and playing with things.

One thing I can't get it to do is recognise my internet connection, which is coming out of a router connected directly to the ADSL modem. I'm sure it's just a matter of tweaking...

{a couple of minutes later} If I plugged the cable in the right hole, it might help!

OK, I'm up and running and online. Woohoo!

To tell the truth, I don't really want more than what's already there. Add Canada, France and Germany. Anything else is gravy.

But hey, I'm flying again tomorrow!

Well, that was easy! Somewhat to my surprise, I checked http://127.0.0.1 and discovered an Apache webpage being served up. Cool. Now to download MediaWiki and see if that's as easy.

I can't say that I'll have much time to play. I'm flying off tomorrow morning, and I've got a tonne of stuff to do. And another tonne I won't have time for.

My old CDMA cell phone charger blew up a month or so back, and as usual I've left it till the last moment to get a new phone. I wanted something i could use overseas, something light and something with a flip top so Kerri could use it. With an hour left before COB I hit the Telstra shop, only to find that their cheapest fliptop was a bit more than I wanted to pay. $30 a month max, thanks!

Quick dash to the one in Civic, selected the model I wanted in a couple of minutes and we then spent the next twenty minutes on hold waiting for Telstra HQ to change some code on my record.

And now I've got a neat little phone with more features than I could possibly use. I guess I'll have to load up all the dongles and software and RTFM. Heaven knows where I'll find the time. This Bluetooth headset is probably a cool feature but it looks like more trouble than I really need.

Still and all, I'll need a phone on the road, and this one I can tuck into a pocket.
