Well, my luggage finally returned to my bosom. I parked at Canberra airpoit this afternoon, walked into the baggage area and was rewarded with a big flash of yellow. I had to wait in line, but I finally collected it and wheeled it proudly out to the car.

DS was at the wheel, getting a rather more challenging driving experience than mere;ly tooling around the suburb, for we went on from the airport along the road to Queanbeyan, getting up to 100 km/h at times, along a nice bendy bit in the back way to Queanbeyan, through Queanbeyan's streets and a little bit of rural driving out to the cattery. The final bit was the best/worst, because there is a really rollercoastery steep series of hills down and then up, with a right angle bend smack at the bottom, and then a blind turn into the entrance.

But he handled it with care and aplomb. He's getting towards his licence after a shaky start and I'm proud of him.

Collected Coomie the skittish terrier with no worries. She's a veteran of weekends (and whole weeks and fortnights) here and knows that she'll eventually be collected. in the meantime she gets well looked after.

But it was Claude the cat's first time. He probably thought he was going to the vet's, and he may have thought he had been abandoned when we didn't collect him for three days.

The young lady petcarer went off into the cathouse, and returned a few minutes later with our cat cage. I looked at it and was trying hard to find words that would put the matter firmly but politely.

DD beat me to it. "He's lovely, but he's not ours," she said.

Then there was a longish period where the catlady disappeared, looking for our brown Boy Burmese, while we three discussed possible scenarios and Coomie the dog considered the disappearance of her main rival.

The catwrangler reappeared (minus cat) and with a worried expression on her face invited one of us to come and help hunt for him.

DD went in and they eventually discovered Claude lying hidden under some sleeping material, pretending he was a piece of brown shadow in the corner of the cage.

So that was that. He made anxious noises all the way home from inside his catcase, while Coomie bounded about the interior of the car, happy to be returning home.

Claude took a while and a bit of loving to recover, but last I looked he was on somebody's lap, snoring happily under a blanket.

My bag can't have been handled terribly gently. There's a bit broken off my yellow mug, the edge punch for my Circa notebooks had come apart and there were odd little bits of paper everywhere inside the bag (I was able to reassemble it, but that didn't get the confetti re-gathered), one of my travel journals had shaken several pages loose, and there were a few other minor bumps and scrapes to things.

Obviously as unaccompanied baggage it had been inspected several times, and they hadn't bothered to do up the tightening straps again, so there had been a bit of movement.

Good to have it back.

Good to be back.

What a relief to have your bag back! Though things were shaken up, I'm glad it's back in your hands.

Glad to hear that your bag is back, but what a shame about the mug. Can it be rescued to use again, or will it now become an ornament?

The mug's usable - just the little tab at the top of the insert has broken off. I'll probably glue it back on. Not that I use the plunger function much, anyway.

Sounds like a very interesting few days! Glad to hear you've got everything back reasonably intact - bags, belongings, animals, sanity... The fun of travelling!
