Back home in the land of winter

I've got the heater running, I'm wearing a jumper, and I'm back here in my familiar cluttered office.

And my luggage, so far as I know, is still in New York. I rang Qantas, and I dropped in at the luggage office in Sydney on the way through (paying $7 for 15 minutes parking, thank you very much Macquarie Bank) and they both tell the same story - no news. And no big yellow bag. I'm sure it will turn up - it has a couple of Qantas Gold luggage tags on it and there are any number of items inside with my details on, most notaly a couple of travel journals I should be very sorry indeed to lose.

A bunch of books, my big yellow tote bag, my England mug, and my toilet bag. And my phone recharger.

Humph.

Both. I didn't have too many books and I was travelling rather light, so I tucked the tote bag inside the rolling duffle and it worked out at 24 kilos.

Oh Pete, what a real nuscience. Do the airline actually know where your bags are or they just guessing?

I got the feeling that there was a certain amount of guessing going on, but there was a lot of confidence that I'd get my bag(s) back.

My fault for not checking further in New York. The problem was that they sent my bag Glasgow-JFK direct instead of Glasgow-LHR-JFK (a couple of very tight connections) and presumably it was around somewhere for me to collect, take through customs and then check in again.

However, nobody had explained to me what was going on, and as it wasn't on the carousel (or rather off it, as there were only a few bags stacked at the side when I finally got there), I was disinclined to go hunting through the midnight bureaucracy especially when thebiblioholic had been waiting for me for an hour or so. I didn't know if it had been sent through to Sydney via (say) Singapore, which would certainly have made more sense from the airline's point of view.

Anyway, I wasn't stopping off anywhere on the way hoe, so I didn't really care if it was delayed, so long as it eventually got back to me.

I'm sure it will, but in the meantime it's a bit of an annoyance as I have to use my secondary toothbrush and razor out of my emergency carryon kit, and several items of clothing aren't available for me to wear now.

I hope it all turns up soon, though. What a bummer to end of a fun holiday!
