I've known for a long time that the best way to lose weight is to exercise before breakfast, but breaking long habits is difficult. I usually get up around five, make myself a cuppa and check my mail and online communities. As most participants are American or British and they are active while I sleep, that usually takes a while. Then I read the paper over breakfast before my wife gets up.

Going out in the cold winter air or hopping on the exercise bike ain't that attractive, especially when I have to change into outdoors clobber.

But I've recently gone up a couple of kilos from a weight that had been stable for years, so there was an incentive. Put on a leather jacket and my boots and set off around the block earlier, thinking of the Tasmania chapter which I'll write a bit later on today. Nobody else walking the streets and very few vehicles. Had to open up a bit as I was cresting the incline towards the end. Good to see a bit of rain had fallen during the night. Even better that I'd cleared the clothesline yesterday arvo.

Got ripped off at Revolve yesterday. I used to be able to get a crate of excellent books for five bucks, but a few too many bookdealers like me caught onto this and first the price started going up $10 or more for a box of mainly picked-over stuff, and yesterday I had to go into the "Better Bits" shop, where they charge five dollars a book, as I found out. One of the four books had a loose cover, I later discovered. Oh well, I got a new Michael Connelly book in good nick, and realistically, the five Aussie dollars charged is about my minimum price of $US3.

Won't do it again unless I find something really good.

Ooops. Seven AM. Must wake up the daughter for more prac teaching. Keen she is.
