Black Swan

I was walking beside a river in Frankfurt (I don't know whether it was the Main or a tributary) and I pointed at some water birds, "Look, white swans!"

I was also walking beside Elhamisabel and she looked surprised and then incredible when I explained that sure we had swans in Australia, but they were black.

And here one is. I tried for a close-up, but the combination of swan and photo movement made for an interesting effect.

I have never heard of such a thing! Thanks for posting about this. You have broadened my horizons. I have only ever known them to be white. There is a family of white swans that live in a pond that the commuter train I ride passes every day.

The ones around here get hand-fed all the time. Sit down on the lake edge with a pile of bread pieces and they'll come up and take them from your hand.

I can't believe never heard of this before you mentioned it. I mean when you told me, I first thought you were joking. And then Sunneschii googled a picture for me. Wow! And if I had read the one book Iwas reading at the time ("This Thing of Darkness" by Harry Thompson) further, i would have read about white and black swans as well.

We have a couple of those in Ottawa. They're really massive, and aggressive (or maybe a better term would be unafraid of everything) - I've seen one in a fight with a family of Canada geese at the Rideau river. One gets the impression that they will beat you up if you don't give them the bread ends and cracked corn fast enough. The white swans steer clear of them.
