I've installed the BitTorrent thingy and I'm downloading one of the presentations. The one I reaally want is Lisa Wingate's session, which quite apart from it exhibiting Tzurriz's unique and quirky style as a camerawoman, is probably good for seeing Mojosmom and Lisa interacting in a magical way.

It's running slowly now, and if this is intended as a test of the software for future conventions, then I think it would work, but there would need to be some distribution of further downloads so it gets shared once downloaded and all the load isn't coming off one laptop on a dialup in a hotel room - or is this how P2P works?

Certainly we'd be likely to get hundreds of keen BXers wanting to see events as they unfold.

More useful, perhaps, with an American style convention, where there are a number of set-piece sessions and the camera can be left running continuously. A/NZ conventions tend to be more out in the field, and less structured, so there would probably have to be a certain amount of delay while footage was edited.

But it could be fun. I must look into this.

If I understand how bittorrent works correctly . . .

(that's a mighty big damn if)

The load will get distributed by definition. See, the first person to access the files downloads them from Jfroebe's laptop (which he'll have set up to be the super-powerful server in his apartment in Chicago). Then the next person (let's say you) get 1/2 from the laptop, and 1/2 from the server. The fourth gets 1/3 from the laptop, 1/3 from the server, and 1/3 from skyring's computer. It continues on this way, so that as more people download it, they are also "serving" it, but in small bits and pieces to even more people.

So, when we get to person 500, they are getting it in 1/499 increments from everyone who has downloaded it previously, which makes it not take so long. Make sense?

Thanks, dearest!

You should consider a career as a writer. That was crystal clear. I shudder to think of the technical morass J would have had me wade through.

Pete, where it's overcast, raining, cold and dark and the only warmth and light in my life is shining through from Chicago.

Let me send some sunshine from Oregon, then. It's been nice and sunny for about half of the day.
