Reading the paper and suddenly the lights flickered, there was a graunching noise from downstairs and when I looked, there was a cloud of smoke rising above my computer!
Yikes!!!
Flew down the steps, prepared to pull plugs out, but there seemed to be nothing actually conflagrating, just a dissipating smoke cloud and an electricly smell. Hmmm. Computer power lights were on and it was actually booting up. It looked OK when I logged on, just no network access. Hmmm. Maybe I fried the network card.
I shut the thing down and powered up the laptop. No network access.
The puff of smoke definitely hadn't come from the router, so what was going on?
Turned out that one of my powerboards had gone berserk, as I discovered when I moved my battery recharger from one to the other. Puff of black smoke as battery recharger cooked. I've pulled out that powerboard now, rearranged cords and got everything working. But it was looking all pretty expensive for a while there.
