Safe at home in Amsterdam

In brief. We got our car to Istanbul airport in good time after exploring the Topkapi Palace. Interesting to see Abraham's saucepan and Moses's staff. Impressed by the decorations.

Long queue for security, short queue for our Heathrow flight. Errr. No flight.

"Eruption in Iceland," the clerk said, showing us a printed bulletin.

"Don't do it again!" I wagged my finger at him, making him personally responsible for eruptions. He smiled.

Ticket office found - after a short but extremely worrying wait - a direct flight to Amsterdam on Turkish Airlines, so we arrived three hours earlier and had better food.

Shuttle to our hotel which had our booked room available, met up with Mojosmom for dinner, and postprandials with Crrcookie and Melydia before we started falling asleep.

Today is a quick flip through the galleries, followed by the convention meet'n'greet, where I fear some longed-for faces may not be visible.

Ah! Mojosmom. She is top of my wish to meet list. Someday I hope.
This will be one Convention where toasts to absent friends will be agonisingly heartfelt.
I've been reading the Convention thread and recognizing so many names who should be there and likely won't.
Puts even more responsibility on you for in-depth reporting and I just know how well you'll shoulder that responsibility, you and your flying fingers.

I am insanely jealous you and mojosmom are high on my list of people-I-want to meet too, and there you are together.

At least, on a personal level, I don't feel so bad about not going now, because I probably wouldn't have made it anyway, and I really couldn't afford to lose the money. FB is buzzing with people speculating about whether or not they will make it!

Whoever is there you are already in great company, so have a marvellous time all of you!

Give a hug to BookGrrl if you see her (Canadian Madeleine, good friend of mine but we couldn't manage to arrange to meet up)

to travel around a bit first with Mike (thyroidman) so I expect and hope that she is in Amsterdam already and not caught somewhere else. Haven't heard from her and likely won't unless she dips into an internet cafe at some point.

I do wonder when she is supposed to be flying home and if this will affect her. I may call her mum (also a bookcrosser) to see if she's heard.

Ah good - I thought she was going out before the actual Convention and coming back straight after it.

I wasn't ever going, quite glad now as I wouldn't have been able to anyway! My big event this year is going to the Iris Murdoch Society conference in September!
