If there’s one thing cabdriving has given me, it’s a love of jazz. Experimenting with music in the cab, I soon gave up on commercial radio stations. The ads were too intrusive and the chatter too distracting.

Public radio was better, but even the classical radio station with its minimal human presence was sometimes unsatisfactory. The tracks they selected rarely matched my needs: some pieces were too quiet for easy listening in the ambient noise of a car, some were too raucous, and opera is an acquired taste.

But the jazz segments of a Saturday evening hit the spot. I soon learnt the big names and the best albums, and before too long I was building up a CD library of favorites.

“They made the mistake of putting the cab rank in Manuka outside Abel’s record store,” I’d tell the customers, “and I’m blowing all the profits in there.”

Chet Baker, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane and all the rest. I loved them, and every now and then I’d meet a fellow devotee amongst my passengers. Not everyone likes jazz, but few people dislike it, and it’s pleasant listening, with enough interest to keep the brain stimulated.

I picked up a couple of senior bureaucrats the other day, driving them back across the lake to Department of Foreign Affairs. They picked up on Miles Davis playing Kind of Blue, and reminisced to each other about jazz clubs in exotic locations. Little hole in the wall locations where you’d have to sneak a bottle in from the convenience store around the corner, but the last member of some famous band swung a mean saxophone.

“Let’s just stay in here for another hour until this finishes,” one said to the other. I smiled. My kind of people.

But the got out at the office. “Thanks for that, driver,” one said as he signed the chit. “I love My Funny Valentine.”

How do you play your ipod in your taxi? And is there any chance you can bring whatever gadget you are using to NZ so we can listen to some music while driving (otherwise you'll get sick of me talking the whole time :p)

I have a Sony TMR-BT10 which connects to the earphone socket of the iPhone and sends out a Bluetooth signal to a Motorola Motorokr Bluetooth handsfree, which pumps out a FM signal to the car radio. A real pain to have it all hooked up and everything charged up during a twelvehour shift, and the sound quality ain't that great. I used to have a thing called a Tunestick which connected onto the iPhone flat connector and allowed a power cord to be daisy-chained, but somehow that got broken (after a year's sterling performance) and I can't afford to replace it.

However, I'm hoping that the rental car(s) will have auxiliary connectors or better yet, iPod sockets. We'll have music and maybe inflight videos.

But you may talk all trip long and I won't get bored one little bit.

*fingers crossed* - or we could just get some cheap battery powered speakers! So I can give my voice a rest :p

Are you sure X is coming on the road trip - I've emailed her twice and no reply yet :s :(

I'm not sure she's coming, no, but she's applied for a passport and my expectation is that she'll be flying over to Canberra to stay a night or two with Kerri and I and then travel with me to Wellington and down to Christchurch. Once she gets her passport then she'll probably make further arrangements.

I hope she comes. She'll enjoy it all immensely, and we'll enjoy her company. She has a sense of fun and adventure.

I'm also looking forward to showing her a bit of Canberra and then playing the seasoned tour guide, escorting her through immigration etc.
