Sunday and I'm usually too tired after a week's driving to do much.

So I quit early - like four in the morning after a twelve hour shift - so I could get a bit of sleep.

Kerri had found an art auction she wanted to go to. Held at the Hyatt, viewing commenced at 1030, so by some miracle I was out of bed, showered, shaved, fed and clothed and beating down the doors of the Hyatt on time. After a bit of running around, we found the viewing room and had a look.

What a disappointment. Most of the images we liked were prints - what they called "photo oils" - and there's no way I'm going to bid at auction for a print, no matter how tastefully it is framed. The original artworks were mostly either brightly-coloured stuff from prolific artists like Pro Hart or Aboriginal art one step up from fingerpainting.

Aboriginal art can be incredibly rich and visually appealing, but most of this stuff was junk. There was at least one work which was painted with fingers. Again, I'm not going to stand at auction and bid for stuff which shows no evidence of skill or talent, just because it happens to be paint on canvas.

We went home and did the Sunday morning read the weekend papers and drink coffee thing, which was pleasant in the sunshine. Had to hunt down the chooks at one stage - two of them had escaped to next door and weren't immediately visible, despite Kerri and I wandering around calling out "chook-chook-chook" in hopeful tones. When we finally found them, they were good as gold, following at our heels like puppies. I make sure that any contact I have with them is accompanied by food, even if it's no more than a handful of grass, so they love me.

After a long afternoon nap, I had a call from DD in NZ. Her students and fellow teachers love her. And she them. It sounds like she's enjoying her time, despite a few minor problems with the car.

Dinner was at Mecca Bah in Manuka. Middle-eastern food in a cheerful, comfortable setting. A few hardy souls ate outside under heaters, but it's still too chilly for real outdoor after dark dining. We ate inside, a few tables away from the fireplace.

I've got another day and a bit off before I start work again. I've got tax returns to prepare and maybe a little writing.
