I'm aiming for Alexander McCall Smith's model of a thousand words a day, but life might get in the way, and I'm hardly likely to be anywhere near as deft as the master, but I'm having fun so far. When I run out of taxidriver jokes, I'm going to be in trouble.

Unlike J R Rowling, I have only the faintest notion of plot arcs. However, I doubt that Quint is going to slay his monster.

Kim is headed for a richly-deserved tragedy.

Anne may be headed for love. As she has been headed so many times in the past.

And Harley, I don't know how he's going to come out. A mystery man, as ever.

This hunger certainly gives one an appetite!

Lunch was a glass of spiced tomato juice, three dried apricots and a few little snacky crispy bits from a packet in the cupboard.

I'm down to my lowest weight for a long while. 82.4 kilos. My belt needs another hole in it, and my uniform trousers are too big.

But no, I'm not hungry. I'm living off stored fat, and taking in just enough sustenence in light meals to keep my metabolism going at all hours.

My weight fluctuates a kilo or so, but the trend is downwards.

I'm aiming to get into the 70s kg-wise.

And age-wise too.
