Apr. 19th, 2008 07:59 amConvention has begun, and as usual, I'm far too busy to post. Stealing this tiny bit of time before walking through the frigid winter of April to Imperial Collage. Sunny South Kensington? Pah!
Thursday we met up for lunch at the Shades on Whitehall. Newk had arrived andwas in the processof corrupting Elhamisabel. Or entertaining her. About twenty BookCrossers filtered in, hugs all round, good to see Yokospungeon especially, the picture of happiness with a bump and a diamond as big as the London Eye.
Dragged Newk off to a West End play. The History Boys at Wyndhams on Charing Cross Road. Almost got chucked out when we began taking pictures of each other. Great play, even though I had seen the film already. Got awhole set of new insights.
Dinner deservesa book in itself. Bone marrow, blood oranges, pigeon pie. Great wine, great company, interestng restaurant. They kicked us out about midnight.
Friday was cold and windy. We had a sleep in and got in contact with Otakuu, who was just round the corner in another hostel. Ended up having coffee and then going in to New Zealand House to meet up with FutureCat and Lytteltonwitch, who were laundering passports.
We then had a very quick ride on a number nine bus up the Strand, Fleet Street, past St Pauls, through the City, to the Tower and Tower bridge. Got the front seats in an old Routemaster - what a buzz!
Then onto the tub back to find the Convention venue for the Eye "flight". A few minutes late, we hung around with the stragglers bunch and then had a private trip to Westminster and across Westminster Bridge, which was full of tourists savouring the moment in photography and holding onto their hats in the icy wind.
Met up with the rest of the group and we duly jumped aboard the moving capsule. Very grey and not much visibility, but still a great experience to see London open up. I looked for BuckinghugePalace, couldn'tfind it and then looked again, there it was almost at my feet.
Back to the hostel for a well-needed rest, then we walked up to the college for the meet'n'greet. Too much, far too much to do everything and see everybody. Won a gorgeous Delft ginger jar at the Tombola. I won't mention everybody, but especially good to see Greedyreader, sex goddess extraordinaire.
Sigh. Hugged a lot of women and glanced at a lot of books. Was very good.
The Kiwis presented me with a Christchurch 2009 convention t-shirt, which I wore proudly for the rest of the evening.
Left early with Kerri, Teotakuu and ConstantWeader. Slept. Snored.
Cripes. Is that the time? Gotta go!
