Dead Mouse

Don't read this if you are of a sensitive dispostion. My mouse died yesterday. My main mouse, the one I got in sydney the day before the Bookcrossing convention last year. All of a sudden, it just stopped pointing. I could move it and the red light still shone, but there was no corresponding pointer movement on screen. Ugh.

Rummaged around for a normal mouse and plugged that into the USB port - why do I always get these plugs upside down? - and finished my task before turning my attention to my beloved wireless mouse that Microsoft gave me for attending an incredibly boring breakfast seminar in Sydney. Perhaps leaving Canberra about three in the morning didn't help my concentration, but CRM isn't that thrilling a subject at the best of times.

Change the batteries. Easier said than done - my battery recharger blew up in the big powerboard meltdown last week and though I'd bought a new powerboard and batteries, I hadn't gotten around to plugging them in. Didn't want to risk another expensive puff of black smoke. My mobile phone recharger also bit the dust in the disaster and my cellphone is dead until I work out what to do. More on that later.

So with a bit of trepidation I plugged in the powerboard - one with a safety cutout switch. No smoke, no crackles, no sparks. I put the set of batteries in the recharger and plugged it in. OK!

And after a while, my wireless mouse was back in operation!

Not sure what to do about the phone. The contract has expired, so i might just go onto pay as you go if I can find a new charger. Then again, I could really use a cell phome overseas, and my CDMA phone is no good outside Australia. I can buy a cheapie for the cost of a new recharger, or close to it, so I might go that route. On the third hand, i'd really like a smartphone with a PDA and camera and Bluebottle built in. Might just keep my eyes open for a special deal.
