Weekending

Friday was noted for a lack of Internet access, and when it did resume it was flakey. Very frustrating not to have the net on line, and even though I could dial in through my laptop, it just wasn't the same.

I went for a walk and thought about NaNoWriMo. I've been having thoughts about a Bookcrossing novel for a while now, based around two themes - a love story or a stalking story, both hinging on books left and released. You've Got Mail is an instance of the sort of thing - both participants are at first unaware of each other, then find a message from the other, form an online relationship and things flow from there. Of course, I don't want to be too derivative, and so a love story felt a little tacky, and while the possibilities of stalking are darker and more interesting, I see Bookcrossing in a positive light, so this isn't really something I want to hang a whole novel on.

But without giving away too much of the plot, I've found a way to include both, based on an incident I heard by accident on the radio a few days ago. As I walked up Vasey and turned past the school and the "Military Ordinariate", I blocked out the plot, characters and setting in my head.

Fired up OneNote when I got home and put down my thoughts. Excellent program for jotting stuff down - I've got a dozen projects on the go and I just add a few notes or a picture or a web reference when they occur. Ran the plot past Kerri last night when we strolled down to the bottle-o for something to go with dinner. She likes it, especially the twist in the tale.

We celebrated the arrival of our new kitchen table and chairs. Buying second hand furniture is cheap, but it rarely results in pieces of quality, my Parliamentary Library bookcase aside - I'm sure they left a zero off the price tag there. Anyway, we found a chap at the Old Bus Depot Markets with a set of four chairs that Kerri liked and she also asked him to supply a circular slab of wood to fit the table. We took him a sample of the benchtop wood and when he turned up yesterday with a big disk it was clear he'd done a superb job of matching the wood, right down to the glorious red colour. Unscrewed the old laminex/chipboard top and screwed on the new one, and it is just gorgeous!

Celebrated with a dinner around the kitchen table and a bottle of the 2003 Mrs Wigley Rose - contains fish and milk products. A merry meal.

And then my Fathers Day treat of a visit to the planetarium. This was the idea of my daughter, who recently saw a show there as part of her Maths Expo weekend. She came back with stars in her eyes and insisted we simply must go. She was dreadfully afraid she'd see the same show, but it was a different one, about Voyager with lots of photographs from the mission. This ties in nicely with a science doco on the Cassini probe we watched recently.

All told, a very pleasant day. More of the same today, we have to visit the markets to return the woodman's tape measure which he inadvertently left here, and I'll get some munchies to take on a picnic in the park with Littlemave, visiting from Sydney. I suspect I've got a box of chocolates as well, of which I'll have a token one or two with the balance to be consumed by the younger members of the family.
