Bitterness on Bookcrossing
Apr. 17th, 2004 01:03 pmI'm in two minds about the Wild Animus controversy. There have been some really appalling posts and as I noted, Ron has stepped in, but in true Bookcrossing fashion it seems that many of the issues have been thrashed out and if not resolved then at least agreed to disagree.
I've done some stats and it seems that it's really a bit of a storm in a teacup, with very few people actually having read their copy (or at least admitting to). There's about 40 ratings all told, ten of which are from one person (all tens, oddly enough).
Some people really hate it, some really like it, some like bits, some hate bits.
There's also that Mt TBR problem - many people won't be reading this book anytime soon.
As regards my own book, I've been doing a bit of tidy up. I've uploaded a back cover, which is pretty bland. The image of the Bookcrossing sign between the "horns" of Barad-dur was beyond my cyberartistic abilities, and to be quite frank, just adding text to a photograph is about the limit of my powers. Heaven knows how I'm to get this map done.
Fixed up a few of the typos and poor syntax in the back of the book. Been picking at it here and there. Adding in information on LOTR sites.
Big problem is that I can't get it to print - there is apparently a piece of ArialMT font somewhere in the word file, it can't be embedded in the PDF and as a result Lulu won't accept it for printing. Can't find it and it's a real pain.
Also the download size is now 3 megs, up from 2 with very few changes made. Puzzling.
Must get a fresh PDF made before people start hearing about it and downloading. Might have to save the whole thing as plain text into a new document and reformat it, as well as paste in all the pix. Bleah.
Inlaws and friends for lunch tomorrow. Swept away a lot of the fallen leaves into a huge pile under the desert ash. Cut off the overhanging limb from the apple gum near the mailbox. If it's a nice day tomorrow we'll be eating outside and I'll do some more tidy-up on the deck.
Either way I'll have to clean up the study a bit - crowded with piles of books old computers, boxes, clutter of all sorts.
Interesting to get titbits from the conventions - living vicariously, like so many others hanging on the forums.
