Glory and Trumpets
I got the knock on the door I've been expecting for a week now - a box of books from Lulu - a box of my books!
You may understand my feelings - this is the first time I've held an actual book in my hands and know that I've written it. Not a folder full of pages, not a website full of drafts, not even something I've had printed out at the local print shop, but an actual paperback book with a cover and everything!
My main worries were the cover, the photographs and the map, but they all worked out well. Text is bright and clear, photographs if not quite as sharp as I'd like, at least recognisable. The cover didn't chop anything off and the pictures look great.
Have to work out who gets what. I'll keep a copy, I'll release a copy at the New Zealand High Commission. A copy to Aunt Judy in Te Kaha. A copy to Kerri's parents, my Mum, and that leaves me five to divide amongst all my siblings and friends. I'll have to set one going as a bookring here at the next Meetup.
So exciting!
I've just finished Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods, supposedly his best book. I'm sure I can do as well.
Paid a deposit for the accomodation on the Gold Coast. Should be good - a tower block at Surfers. Hope it is high up for the views and on the north side for the sun. Seven nights, but I'll only get a couple of days uninterrupted, what with the bookfair and the trip north to Rocky in the middle. Must book the youth hostel next. Hopefully I'll be able to scrounge a laptop from somewhere and pack it solid with writing.
Won an auction for a Microsoft shirt. Microsoft Operations Manager 2004. Sniped it with 11 seconds to spare for $11.50 - love it when I pull off a snipe. I set up the windows, enter my final bid price, make sure I'm signed in and then hit Refresh about a zillion times in the last five minutes to check on last-minute bids. Gets the adrenalin pumping.
Another one coming up in three days, for a very nice jacket, albeit blue - not my colour.
Jumped into a chatroom and watched the unveiling of the Bookcrossing 100 in real time - great fun!
I even went for a walk this morning before breakfast. Getting back into the swing of things as my cold dries up.
