I got the feeling when visiting Hawai'i that there were two states coexisting. The tourist domain, where everything is geared towards servicing visitors. Such as Waikiki which has a certain distance in space and attitude from the other Hawai'i, the one inhabited by those who are staying for more than a week.
I can't say that I cared for the first one all that much. Pleasant but shallow.
