Down in the Air
Jul. 6th, 2006 10:40 amWe're less than an hour away from Sydney as I write this. My latest adventure is almost over, just more than a week to fly around the world and have an incredible time. This is what I live for - meeting BookCrossers around the world and having fun.
I've got a bag full of souvenirs, the latest ones being some Japanese sweets/lollies/candy to go with the Girl Scout cookies I swapped Tim Tams for in New York with
thebiblioholic.
Let's see.
Canberra: I spent a half hour in the Qantas Club with my daughter, watching airliners arrive and depart, before getting in one and hopping off to
Melbourne: A shortish wait in the lounge there. Bought a bottle of water to replace the one I left at home.
Hong Kong: Just enough time for a shower and a coffee.
Frankfurt: Fond memories of
elhamisabel guiding me through the terminal like an expert, in comparison to my bumbling efforts. The weirdest part was discovering that airside and landside people could occupy the exact same space without any breach of security. This was on the people mover, which runs on the same tracks, but has different platforms. It confused me, and as I was feeling a bit weary after the long flight and it was a very grey, flat kind of a day, I decided against going into town, and instead drank spiced tomato juice in the lounge.
London: My baggage got left behind in Frankfurt, so it was a rather worrisome afternoon before it arrived at my hostel about eight in the evening. Two early morning camera-toting walks, one up the Thames, the other down. Bumming around London just being a walking tourist. Listened to JimOn at Euston, but left just before the BookCrossing update.
Birmingham: Met
dubnordie at the station after a short train trip, and she set me straight on transport, as usual. I'm sure she thinks I shouldn't be let out by myself. The weekend was immense. Well worth the trip. Just being with so many extraordinary people lifted my spirits amazingly. Too many to list, but I think the photographs showing me smiling my way through the UnConvention pretty well sum it up. I had a walk or two along the canal, a delightful, picturesque spot.
Glasgow: Only ten minutes or so in Scotland. Not enough to properly assess the land of my ancestry.
London (Heathrow): A quick terminal transfer, and a book released.
New York: An all too brief whiz around Gotham, guided by thebiblioholic, for which many thanks!
Tokyo: Five hours in transit, much of which was spent battling with the wireless internet in the lounge.
Sydney: In transit (at the moment). Discovered that my luggage remains in JFK. Will be picked up soon by Kerri for a couple of days here in Sydney.
