Slashdot published a story a couple of days ago about LLuna, an Jabber client that shows other users of the same site as translucent "avatars" with speech bubbles. The idea is that you can speak to people browsing the same site in real time. Interesting. Of course the LLuna site, slashdot and Google have a few avatars visible, quite a lively crowd sometimes, but every now and then I see someone else at another place. Livejournal seems about right for this.

I've customised my "avatar" to look like like a tall balding gent holding hands with a shorter professional woman, which is about right.
