Goodies in the post

OK, I'm a sucker for a giveaway. I've got two domain names registered, and I've been trying to find a way of making good use of them. An Australian developer's magazine was doing a sunscription offer - a year's subscription and it came with a how-to manual for DotNetNuke from Wrox. After some very feeble experimenting with LAMP, I decided to return to my roots and sent away. Time passed. No book.

Today it arrived, but it wasn't a book. It was a computer toolkit. A very nice toolkit, and it's their current giveaway offer, but I wanted the book, dammit! I only subscribed because of the book. Humph.

Adding insult to injury, the packaging contained no hint of the sender or why it had been sent. Just my address on the padded envelope. Way to build customer relationships, guys!

Better, though still very tardy, was Symantec and a giveaway offer from last year. Buy a copy of Norton Internet Security and you get a $30 cashback and a 256Mb USB key for upgrading. I figured that with the rebates I was getting the package for not a real lot, so I upgraded. Three months for the cheque to arrive and a couple more weeks for the key. A very nice key, so I'm chucking my old 64Mb key in with my laptop auction.

That leaves three packages I'm expecting. Two from ebay, being two shirts and a vest in one package and a jacket in another. And the third from LL Bean, being a sturdy brightly coloured duffle on wheels.

Hurry up Mr Postman!

Musings on corporate expansion

You guys have LL Bean, too? The company started in Maine and my husband's family calls it "Jello Bean". I love the company (we were like kids in a candy store when we visited the flagship store in Freeport).
I normally don't like it when companies go worldwide, but I guess I'm okay with LL Bean because they seem nice. I wonder how accurate my feelings of trust are.

LL Bean isn't in Australia. When I saw thebiblioholic's bright tangerine duffle on wheels, I thought that's exactly what I want. My existing bag is a fairly cheap old thing. Granted, it's stood up to a few long trips, but the wheels are beginning to squeak, the cloth doesn't inspire confidence and the zip is fairly flimsy. And it's black - like everyone else's.

One thing about the big yellow tote bag is that it stands out on a baggage carousel. It's also very sturdy. (It's not lockable, but then again, all I ever put in there are lots of BookCrossing books, so I wouldn't weep bitter tears if someone rifled it.)

I looked up LL Bean on the web, found the sturdy rolling duffle I wanted - I think TBH's has a couple more pockets than what's currently on offer, but that's OK - and whacked in an order. I also bought a TSA combination lock. Airmail postage from the USA at $US35 isn't cheap, but for my next big trip, when my luggage is going to go through a lot of handling, I'll be very glad to have something big and bright and sturdy.

Getting mail is so much fun! I was so thrilled to be on a ring the other day not so much for the book itself but for the fact that it meant there'd be something in my mailbox :)
