It's all a con!
You know these Kiwis and their odd vowel sounds? Well, I was sitting in Boreal's lounge while the rest of the organising committee discussed the arrangements for prizes and goodiebags and giveaways.
"What about the petches?" Boreal says.
"Petches?" Kiwijan and Rarsberry look blank. Beautiful, but blank.
"Putches!" Boreal emphasises, holding her hands a small distance apart.
"Pitches?" Kiwijan ventures, gazing around at framed things hanging from the walls.
"No, potches! You know, patches."
Ahhh. Sighs of comprehension. And a chuckle from me - these Kiwis can't understand each other's vowels!

At least they have vowels!
You say petches/potches/putches/patches/pitches
We say paaaaaaaeytches
[Or do they have a dipthong too? Go through all those vowels at once? "Peaoiyches"? Saves time probably!]

It was KiwiJan that was confused as to what the patches were, not the word.
We were talking about the 2006 BC patches, what to do with them.
