I finally looked up visa requirements today. Japan, France, Guernsey, and Canada don't require visas for Australian citizens. UK and USA I know about already. So all I need to do is rock up and they'll let me in. So long as I have funds for my stay and an onward or return ticket.

Checked on Duxford - they have a big American museum and memorial, which will suit me fine. The USAAF put a huge effort into their bombing offensive and it will be interesting to see some of the aircraft and memorabilia there.

Sorted out a rough timetable for visiting Hiroshima. With [livejournal.com profile] wandering_sag to hold my hand I feel confident in visiting. I'm firmly of the opinion that dropping the bomb shortened the war and saved more lives than were lost, given the preparations for the fanatical defence of the homeland, but equally the story of all those paper cranes has touched my heart. Visiting the Holocaust Museum in Washington last year was difficult, but that was fairly one-sided. Hiroshima has arguments on both sides.

After the past few days of enervating heat, it was a pleasant relief to have an overcast day, scattered showers in the morning, and a slight chill in the air.
