They don't actually weigh people, and it's only on flights where they are pushing the limits that they start getting narky about the rules. Unless you are openly flouting them.

You are allowed a 7kg bag, and a handbag and a camera and a book, maybe a couple of other things. Plus they aren't actually going to make you turn out your pockets unless you are positively bulging.

Another trick is to carry on your bag as if it *doesn't* weigh a lot more than 7kg! You might collapse from strain once you are on the jetway, but so long as nobody thinks you are carrying a heavy bag, they won't stop you.

Cargo pants are convenient for me because I can put extra stuff in the pockets and be able to access the thigh pockets when sitting down in a cramped seat. I have my yellow Kathmandu zipup DayTimer which has all my cards, journal, money and so on, plus a handy outside sleeve where I stick my passport and boarding passes. This is about as bulky as a trade paperback book and having a large pocket to stick it in while I am juggling other things is a big help.

Kathmandu don't make this particular item any more, but they do have something better (without the DayTimer rings) which you could probably press into service as a handbag. They call it a day wallet or something, and it's got lots of convenient slots and pockets and zips, big enough for a couple of books, plus travel documents, credit cards and so on.
