I still have a few shares in Santos, an oil exploration company. Longterm readers will remember that I was swapping Santos and Amcor over when they were both trading around $7.00 - Whenever a sufficient gap opened up between them, I'd sell half of the higher and buy the lower, and then wait for them to reach the opposite position. That was a nice little earner for a while until Santos shot up a few months back.

It went up to $11 or so and I've been getting antsy, wanting to take the profit and put it somewhere else, just in case oil supplies start flowing again down the track and it sinks down again. So I've had a sell order out for about a week, and today my package sold at quite a nice price. This generally means it will head for the roof, but I've taken my profit, and I only sold half of my holding, so there's room for a bit of fat later on maybe.

Putting it into a fertiliser company. We've had some pretty decent rain, it's spring, and I reckon a lot of farmers are buying a lot of fertiliser after some lean years.

In other news, I'm listening to Night of the Triffids on my run(s). It's a sequel to John Wyndham's classic end of the world tale, set 25 years later and told by the son of the original narrator (whose mimeographed account is in every library on the Isle of Wight, according to this new book). It starts off in a similar way to the old book, with darkness descending and triffids invading. I haven't gotten far enough to find out what's causing the darkness yet, but what I like is that the new book is written in the style of the old.

Must go back and read the old book one day. Now that I've actually been to London, I can get some of the settings straight in my mind and have pictures to go with the words.

T. Boone Pickens says that you should never buy stock that you don't understand. No exotic, weird techie stuff for him--or me. Oil and fertilizer I understand! ;-)

Kerri is my brains on stock picks, and I backstop her analysis. I also do the share trading, which is nerve-wracking enough for me!

Interesting. The BBC series of Day of the Triffids gave me nightmares when it first came out...I'm rather tempted by this sequel.
