Osaka horrified me. Not the people, who were polite and charming, if incomprehensible. Not the buildings, which were almost uniformly cleverly and stylishly designed.

It's the whole package. A shambles of town planning that adds up to a hideously ugly cityscape.

I aimed my camera out of the train window and just let the pictures tell the story. The next day I was in Paris, a city of similar size and density, but absolutely charming, even when it was nothing special.

It's a bit drab and colourless isn't it? Then all of a sudden a bright blue building!

I didn't put the headset on, so no sound. It looked rather grey and depressing.

It reminded me of scenes from animes I have watched. So, the animation does reflect what the cities look like.

Tokyo must be a culture shock to those living in areas like Osaka.

I don't think I understand? Did you shoot this video Pete? And put it on YouTube?

It really is a very depressing-looking place. I must say it's a place I would never want to go. I'll bet you were happy to get to Paris!

I went around the world in April - 21 flights in 30 days.

I spent a few days in Japan with the adorable Cari (SKingList in BookCrossing), who let me sleep on the couch and acted as my guide to Osaka Castle and Hiroshima.

Osaka is pretty grim from an aesthetic point of view. In fact most of urban Japan looks that way, often with container terminals and rail yards included.

I shot this (and a number of similar videos) on the train on the way to the airport as I was leaving.

Uploaded to YouTube yesterday. I used a movie maker program (it came as part of Windows) to get it into the right format and then uploaded it. Pretty simple really. They take up to 100meg files, but I wanted to get this down to a reasonable download size, so I compressed it until it was about 5 meg. The original is much higher quality.

And yes, paris is much nicer looking. It has more of a uniformity about it, even if the people aren't quite so nice.
