A house full of excitement
Jun. 20th, 2006 09:33 pmToday we got our gas heating system installed. Ten to six, eight hours of workmen, bustle, noises and activity. Three different teams, the first one to install the heating unit and the ducting, the second to power it all up and stick a controller in the kitchen (and reconnect my shed lights - woohoo!), the third to hook the gas up.
It was getting distinctly chilly as night fell and the gas bloke was still tinkering around with the pipes. But at last he came in and warm air began flowing.
Very happy now - our temporary heating solution wasn't the best. Felt a bit sad for the installation teams - there were some expressions of dismay (at least one of them mine) at the cramped and uncomfortable conditions under the house. I bumped my head on some protrusion, and there came a giggle from above where my darling daughter reclined on the couch.
The fact that the house has been extended several times doesn't help. You know how you have a little square door leading under the house from the outside? Well, we got three of those, one after the other, representing successive "tide marks" of expansion. Not to mention pipes and ducts and cables all over. And a whole bunch of rocks. And a declining lack of headroom.
I caught up with my travel journals while they were working. Pasting in tickets and brochures and maps. London, Cambridge, Dublin, Shrewsbury and now on Frankfurt. Still got the New World to go, and I have such a lot from Charleston, including a lovely little mini-journal presented to me on arrival. BookCzuk and MartiP and Kiptrix, thank you most heartily!
Wednesday is a day off, and then Thursday and Friday we get Kerri's in-ground watering system installed.
